This example will outline how to install EventSentry in a network of ten servers using Remote Update.
that perform different tasks. While some of the servers will need customized filters and targets (e.g. to write to an ODBC database), all of them will share a common include filter and an SMTP target. The following steps will be performed in this order:
• | Install EventSentry on all servers |
• | Apply the common filter and target to all servers |
• | Customize each server individually |
To accomplish this task, perform the following steps (for any or the default group):
1. | Choose a computer to act as the inital template computer. This will usually be your workstation, but it can also be one of the servers where EventSentry will be installed. After all servers are setup they can be administered individually (unless, for example, you choose to apply the targets again). In this example, you will choose workstation1 as the template computer. |
2. | Install EventSentry with the setup routine on the template computer. |
3. | Configure the common include filter and the common SMTP target on the template computer. You can use variables in the Sendername and Subject of the email, e.g. $COUNT in the subject will be changed to the number of events sent in the email |
4. | If needed, configure health settings such as service monitoring and disk space monitoring. |
5. | Except for workstation1 (since it acts as the template installation), add all the computers to the default group in the remote update section. There should be 10 computers in the group |
6. | Perform the installation by sequentially performing the following actions: |
| - Manage Agent(s) -> Install service |
| - Update Configuration -> General Options, Health, Filters & Targets |
| all filters and targets currently present on the remote machine(s) are deleted |
| - Manage Agent(s) -> Start service |
| Note: Starting with version 2.40 you may also choose the "Install & Configure Agent" option which performs all the selected tasks with one click. |
If no errors occur, the EventSentry service will be installed with one filter and one target on all computers. You can then customize each installation (if necessary) by remotely configuring the EventSentry installation.
