Adding Computers

Setting a Group Type

Before you add computers to an existing or new group, you will need to set the correct group type. The group type determines whether computers in a group will be monitored by the heartbeat monitor or not. You can set and change the group type by clicking on the "Heartbeat Options" container in a group.

You can set a group type to the following:

Remote Update Only Group

This group type is the traditional behaviour of a group (up to version 2.43). If a group is set to this type, then computers in the group will not be monitored by the heartbeat service.

Remote Update + Heartbeat Group

This group type is recommended when you are monitoring computers that are also running the EventSentry agent. You can still manage the computers in the group with remote update (pushing out filters etc.), but in addition the computers can be monitored by the heartbeat service.

Non-Windows Heartbeat Group

Use this group type when you are monitoring computers that are not running the EventSentry agent. With this setting, all event log and system monitoring options dissappear from the tree pane (for this group).

Adding or Importing Computers

You can either add computers manually by right-clicking the Computers container of a particular group, or you can import computers from the network or Active Directory. Please see Remote Update -> Importing for more information on importing computers.

Removing Computers

If you configured the heartbeat agent to write the host status information to a database, then you will need to restart the heartbeat agent through the "Service Control" container after you removed one or more computers. If you do not restart the service then you will still see the computer(s) on the heartbeat status page.

Note: When linking a group to Active Directory, be sure to click "Get Service Status" once (right-click the computers container) so that the computers from Active Directory are cached. If you omit this step, then the heartbeat service will not be able to monitor this group. You will also need to select the "Get Service Status" every time the list of computers change in Active Directory. We will be adressing this limitation in a future release of the heartbeat agent.
